My name is

Gage McCann

I am an artist, currently working freelance. From 2013 to 2017, I studied graphic art and design, film, marketing, and video game design at Dixie Hollins High School. All my life, I have been surrounded by creativity, and I knew early on I wanted to become an artist. After several failed attempts at various mediums, I think I've finally found my home with digital art. So, join me on my journey to grow and discover myself as an artist. If you would like to get in touch, please visit the contact page.

Afterimage is an identity created and used by me to brand myself. The name Afterimage comes from the term in art, which refers to an image that remains in your mind, even after the original view of it is gone. An example of this would be staring into a bright light, then looking away from it. In your field of view, you will still see remnants of that light. That's an afterimage. Afterimages are often associated with neon colours, of which I like often to incorporate into my artwork. My goal is to create artworks that are memorable, and will leave a lasting impression on people. An afterimage.

It's also the title of a kickass song by one of my favourite bands, Rush.

Personal

I am an English-American artist, born in Charleston, South Carolina. I call St. Petersburg, Florida, my home, and I have spent most of my life here in "paradise." I attended Dixie Hollins High School and St. Petersburg College, where I studied anything and everything artistic. While trying to find my artistic voice I settled comfortably into graphic design/digital art. In order to put bills on my table and pay my food, I currently work for an insurance company full time. Meanwhile, I am working nearly every day to improve my artwork, and experiment with new mediums.

Inspirations

Despite being born at the tail-end of the 90's, I am heavily inspired by artwork and films of the 80's. Growing up, my dad and I would watch classic 80's flicks, and jam out to timeless rock and metal records. I've always had a love for all things retro, and throughout my studies, I have only grown more fond of it. It's hard to pinpoint exactly when I fully realised this love, but it is hard to deny that what threw me over the edge and down the rabbit hole was the 2012 video game Hotline Miami by Dennaton Games. That, along with the 2011 film Drive, my passion for 80s art came to life. Thanks to the internet, I've discovered many incredible artists and musicians who share my love for the decade, and it's cultural impact. Nowadays, you can find me flipping through old magazines, listening to Synthwave. Chances are, I'm probably wearing some ugly floral shirt, as well. Is it weird for someone who wasn't even close to living in the 80's to love it so much? Probably. Do I give a fuck? No.

While my work is obviously heavily 80's inspired, I draw inspiration from many sources. Artists of all kinds, and people I personally know, inspire me every single day to try new things, find my style, and be the best person I can be.

Here are a few artists who serve as my biggest inspirations, regardless of their art direction/medium, with links to check them out:

Skills, Awards and Certifications

Skills:

I am a hardworking, creative individual, who specializes in digital media. While I am trying to branch out and experiment with as many digital mediums as I possibly can, my expertise resides in cinematography and digital design. I create work for both artistic expression, as for commercial purposes (logos, advertisements, etc.). While most of my work features a retrofuturistic 80's aesthetic, I'm more than capable of creating designs to work within a modern market.

For film work, I am familiar with the entire film making process, from pre-production to post-production. I am competent at all stages, however my skills really shine through in the post-production phases (namely editing).

I work well both by myself, as well as in a group. I have experience as an art director, leading a small team of creatives to provide work for clients.

I'm quite computer literate, and have years of experience with both Windows and Mac operating systems. I primarily use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for my design work, and Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects for my film work. I also have used Adobe Speedgrade and Audition on occasion. With some assistance, however, I can quickly pick up and learn a new program if need be.

Certifications:

I am certified in Adobe Photoshop CS6, Adobe Illustrator CS6, and Adobe Premiere CC.

I am certified in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, and Microsoft Excel.

I have some knowledge of, but am not certified in, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, Adobe Speedgrade, and Autodesk's Maya

This website was designed by me. It may not be the prettiest website, but I'm satisfied with it. I'll likely stick to Photoshop, though...
